Singapore private practice market overview

Singapore remains a magnet for international law firms chasing cross-border deal flow across South-East Asia and building on the city-state's standing as a leading arbitration seat. Partner and team movement was a defining feature of 2025, fuelling lateral hiring across multiple practice groups.

A number of overseas firms have deepened their Singapore footprint in pursuit of arbitration, private capital, M&A and the energy transition. UK and Swiss verein firms in particular have driven much of the corporate and M&A hiring, concentrated at partner and mid-level associate seniority. Late 2025 also saw a US firm significantly scale up its Singapore bench through a multi-partner lateral hire as part of a push toward a full-service offering — a move likely to spur further competitive hiring.

Not every international firm has found the operating environment easy. Several American firms have scaled back or exited their Singapore presence in the past year, part of a wider reassessment by US firms of their footprint in Asia.

Boutique firms continue to gain ground. Partners with established followings are increasingly breaking away from full-service platforms to build specialist practices, reflecting client appetite for deep, niche expertise over generalist coverage.

On the demand side, corporate insolvencies in Singapore climbed to a multi-year high in 2025, sustaining strong demand for restructuring, insolvency and creditor-side talent. Caseloads at major arbitral institutions also remain elevated, keeping international arbitration specialists firmly in demand.

2026 outlook for law firm hiring

Adoption of AI tools among lawyers has accelerated sharply, with industry surveys pointing to a majority of practitioners now using or planning to integrate generative AI into their workflows — a marked jump from prior-year levels. 2025 was something of an inflection point, and firms will increasingly need to translate that shift into client-facing innovation rather than back-office efficiency alone.

We expect this to lift demand for legal operations and governance professionals who can support AI-enabled workflows, whether firms are building proprietary tools or integrating third-party platforms. Fluency with these systems is becoming a baseline expectation rather than a differentiator — the practitioners who use AI well are increasingly displacing those who do not.

Technology investment is likely to become a genuine point of competitive separation between firms. As AI absorbs more document review, research and first-draft work, associate leverage models may shift toward leaner teams.

Despite this backdrop, base compensation across the Singapore private practice market has held broadly steady, with only modest upward movement. The benchmarking below reflects this.

Market intelligence

Observations drawn from ongoing conversations with clients and candidates across Singapore's private practice market.

Partnership timelines are stretching at local firms

Margin pressure and evolving billing models have led several firms to quietly push back partnership timelines. Associates who expected to make partner around the six-year mark are increasingly being held at counsel or senior associate designations instead. We are seeing elevated lateral movement from this cohort, many of whom are now open to partner-track offers at boutiques, mid-level moves to international firms, or a shift in-house.

Workplace flexibility has become a deal-breaker

Singapore's mandatory Flexible Working Arrangement framework, in force since December 2024, has reset candidate expectations. Practitioners at 3–8 PQE are routinely turning down offers that require five days a week in the office. Our data shows firms offering a 3–4 day hybrid arrangement closing lateral hires roughly a third faster than those insisting on full-time office attendance.

The bilingual premium is broadening beyond Mandarin

Mandarin-English bilingual practitioners at 5+ PQE continue to command premiums in the low-to-high teens percentage range across corporate, M&A and finance work. As deal activity into Indonesia picks up, Bahasa Indonesia fluency is emerging as a genuine premium at senior levels too, and we are tracking rising demand from ASEAN-qualified lawyers looking to relocate closer to home.
